Nikoline Liv Andersen

We had the good fortune of discovering the fantastical garments of Nikoline Liv Andersen at the Maison du Danemark just before the exhibition ended (April 5, 2015). Nikoline Liv Anderson is a danish designer who graduated in 2006 from The Danish Design School and is known for her beautiful garments that are fashion pieces as well as works of art. The pieces in this exhibit appear as sculpture, perhaps aided in part to the striking way in which she has painted the mannequins. Her materials are handworked with extraordinary attention to detail and craft, creating unusual surfaces that influence her otherworldly silhouettes and shapes. Allowed to approach the pieces closely we can see the workmanship and appreciate the creativity and imagination that have gone into each garment.

A visit to her website shows the stunning collaborations made with different photographers who have shot her pieces in romantic yet darkly ominous settings, which reference her interest in exploring Vanitas of the baroque period, when artists created elaborate works of art that urged the viewer to abandon earthly pleasures for a more meaningful and spiritual life.

While she did an apprenticeship at Dior under John Galliano, she has avoided the regular fashion industry route by creating exceptional garments that form a commentary on contemporary life. In her pieces for ‘The Dance of the Deaf and Dumb Eye’ we see both elaborate and richly worked fur surfaces and the cheap material of plastic straws which perhaps is intentional juxtaposition of luxe and cheap; in her book it states that these pieces were inspired from the French court of Louis the 16th where the contrast between the rich nobles and the starving populace is being repeated now via the effect of globalization and blind consumerism.
