DISTORTION

Nothing is perfect

Through the integration of “Saturation” and “Imperfection”, we study the idea of “Distortion”. Everything that is already formatted and that we consciously acknowledge can be shaken, twisted and convoluted to offer new constructions.

Integrating movement as a new creative process can provide direction and offer interesting concepts that can drive creativity in textile development. Uncontrollable forces of nature changing the environment and inspiring our creativity.

Our main trend area this season saw Steven Oo and Rory Longdon work into the concept of Distortion through their individual approach to the trend.

DISTORTION – UNDERWATER NYMPH - By Steven Oo | Spinner: Xinsha | Knitter: Jiangsu Yangfan

What is a better place to explore distortion than from underwater ? We took the inspiration underwater by utilizing very sheer and ethereal linens from Xinsha and incorporating digital printing capabilities of Yangfan. There are plays on layering prints where textures and designs are kept to simple voluminous shapes to properly feature the prints. Several different methods of printing are explored as we use prints as under layers on several pieces as well as printing on pleats.

DISTORTION - By Rory Longdon | Spinners: Winning, Yarns & Colours, UPW, Armonia, Zixin, Kyototex, Galaxy | Knitted MRC Knitters

Inspired by a series of frozen flowers photographed by Bruce Boyd. Their natural beauty and colours are distorted and twisted into a new kind of beauty. The Mattness of the flowers against the sheen of the ice. Translucent, iridescent effects, with Distortion of colours and forms.

Fabrications are a mix of natural and tech, with iridescent injections. Feminine yet technical. Surface is key. Yarns are a mix of natural and synthetic - Linen/Cotton blends from UPW, high shine rayons from Lugang and plastic feel yarns from Winning are mixed in jacquards and stitches to portray a distorted beauty.
